About the Oxford Union
The Union is the world’s most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. It has hosted prominent speakers from almost every field of human endeavour; from Johnny Depp and Boris Becker to Malcom X, Robert Kennedy, three US President (Carter, Nixon and Reagan), Yasser Arafat and Mother Teresa. Several prominent personalities have, during their time at Oxford, served as Presidents of the Oxford including the late Pakistan Prime minister Benazir Bhutto and legendary student leader Tariq Ali.
Founded in 1823, for 186 years the Union has promoted debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe. In the words of Michael Heseltine, the Union has “managed to absorb the greatest diversity, the wildest firebrands, the most outspoken and non-conformist people.” Diversity and outspokenness, central to the Union’s foundation, remain its guiding principles to this day.
Simply put, the Union is steeped in history.
